What you are tracking
A habit tracker records whether a specific action happened on a date. Searches for habit tracker template, habit to track, and notion habit tracker want the grid: habits down the side, days across the top. In Notion you can fake that grid with a database of habits and a checkbox per day, or with one row per habit per day. One row per day scales better past a month, because a 31-checkbox row is miserable to edit on a phone.
Pick actions you can mark yes or no in five seconds. 'Be healthier' is not a habit. 'Walk 20 minutes' is. Keep the list under eight. A goal tracker is for outcomes with an end date. A habit tracker is for repeats.
How to read the month
Count the days you did the habit, not the longest streak. A streak breaks and people quit the tracker. A count of 18 out of 30 still tells you the habit is mostly in place. Review on the weekly planner day you already open, so the tracker is not a second app you forget.
Questions
- How many habits should I track?
- Start with three. Add another only after those three have a month of marks. Eight is a practical ceiling for a daily check.
- What is a good habit to track?
- One you can finish in a sitting and mark done without debate: a walk, a set of pages, a bedtime. Outcomes like grades belong in a goal tracker.
