What a Notion template is
A Notion template is a page, or a database, that already has the properties, views, and headings you would otherwise build by hand. You duplicate it into your workspace and replace the sample text. Notion's own template gallery is one source. A written layout, like the ones on this site, is another: you create the properties yourself and you own the page.
Searches for a notion template, notion templates, or free notion templates usually want a blank planner, a note page, or a tracker. The gallery at Notion also has a marketplace of templates other people sell. A free template is enough when the job is a weekly agenda, a bill list, or meeting minutes. Pay for one only when the views and formulas are already the system you want.
What to copy, and what to delete
Keep the property names and the views. Delete every sample row before you invite someone else. A template that still says 'Sample: rent' will get treated as a real bill. Rename the page to the month or the project on the day you duplicate it.
Start with one database, not five linked ones. The weekly planner, Cornell notes, and meeting minutes pages each use a single database. Add a dashboard after you have rows worth summarizing.
How to set it up
- Pick one job. A week, a class, a bill, or a meeting. A template that tries to be a whole life in one page gets abandoned.
- Create the database. Add the properties listed on the matching page here. Use Select for status, Date for due dates, and Person only if more than one member will edit.
- Add one sample row. Fill it, check that the calendar or board view shows it, then delete it.
- Duplicate per period. Duplicate the page at the start of a week, a month, or a term. Do not keep adding years of rows to the first copy.
Questions
- Where do free Notion templates live?
- Notion's template gallery is inside the product when you add a new page. This site publishes the field lists so you can build the same page without an account on a third-party gallery.
- Is the Notion template gallery the same as the marketplace?
- The gallery includes free pages and paid templates from other makers. A paid template is a product. Read what databases it includes before you pay, and duplicate it into a workspace you control.
- Do templates work on the Free plan?
- Yes. Duplicating a page does not require Plus. File size limits and page history differ by plan. See Notion pricing.
