Three linked views on one page. Each view reads an existing database.
A dashboard does not hold the data
A Notion dashboard is a page. The rows live in other databases: tasks, bills, notes, applications. The dashboard holds linked views of those databases, each with a filter. Change a row in the view and you change the source. You do not keep a second copy.
Searches for notion dashboards and database dashboard are this pattern. If you build a new database on the dashboard page and paste values into it, you now have two sources and they will drift. Use a linked database instead.
How many views to put on the page
Three is enough: due soon, in progress, and a list you actually review (notes, bills, or applications). A fourth view is where people stop scrolling. Put the view you act on at the top. A weekly planner can be that top view during the school week.
How to set it up
- Name the decisions. What will you do from this page? Pay, submit, or review. One decision per view.
- Link, then filter. Create a linked view of the source database. Filter to this week, or to a status.
- Hide properties you do not need. A dashboard column with eight properties is a table. Show the name, the date, and the status.
Questions
- What is a database dashboard in Notion?
- A page of linked views. Each view is a window onto a database that lives somewhere else, with its own filter and sort.
- Should each project have its own dashboard?
- Only if you open it. One personal dashboard plus the project pages themselves is easier to maintain than a dashboard per class.
